Suffolk Downs Horse Racing Facility, East Boston, Massachusetts

To celebrate the 75^th Anniversary of Suffolk Downs, Paradigm was contracted by track owner Richard Fields to create a visually compelling, highly interactive tented event on the apron of the track for key VIP attendees themed to the 1930’s…the decade that the facility originally opened to the public.

The event was designed to reflect the future goals of the track and re-think VIP parties of the past, to create an all-new look and feel. The tented party, surrounding a classic Boston clambake, focused on a 1930’s vibe with a series of activities and entertainment, along with equestrian motifs and the feel of Boston maritime boardwalk.

As guests arrived at valet parking in the Suffolk Downs lot, they boarded a trolley and were shuttled to the tented VIP space on the apron, setting the “turn back time” tone. The family-friendly entrance to the party featured a giant carousel, surrounded by themed performers, including jugglers and magicians. The interior tent look, inspired by “Ralph Lauren casual,” featured a series of standing cocktail rounds and seated tables with crisp alternating navy and white linens.

The custom centerpieces cleverly reflected not only the feel of the 1930’s, but also spoke directly to the facility. The first of two designs consisted of a series of riding crops bound together in a tee-pee formation, topped with an equestrian riding hat. At the base were a series of horseshoes that artfully tied the piece together and assisted in the support of the structure. The second centerpiece consisted of a series of “book stacks,” featuring horse-themed books and books from the 1930’s. Atop the stacks were a series of silver framed key photographic images of Suffolk Downs during the 1930’s.

The party featured a custom stage treatment, incorporating walnut wainscoting at the front of the stage. The backdrop featured a walnut border, an ivory drape and a series of large wood framed photographic images from Suffolk Downs in the 1930’s, creating an elegant backdrop for the swing band. Throughout the event, professional costumed dancers encouraged guests to kick up their heels, cigar girls roamed the environment and guests enjoyed a wide variety of interactive activities as they enjoyed a beautiful day at the races.
